Eric Seagren

Eric Seagren is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering at Michigan Technological University, with an affiliation to the Biological Sciences department. He is part of the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC). He holds a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

His research focuses on environmental biotechnology, including in situ bioremediation of contaminated subsurface environments, biological treatment process monitoring, urban stormwater runoff treatment using bioenhanced systems, and microbially-mediated soil improvement. Key areas include sustainable waste management (e.g., biosolids treatment), mine tailings stabilization, and DNAPL (dense non-aqueous phase liquid) dissolution enhancement.

His recent work explores low-cost, low-tech solutions for biosolids production, thermal remote sensing for mine tailings analysis, and biocalcification for geotechnical applications. He has contributed to understanding microbial interactions in contaminated environments and developing practical methods for environmental monitoring and remediation.

His advising and grants involve research into bioremediation strategies, soil stabilization, and sustainable engineering solutions. He collaborates across disciplines within the GLRC to advance environmental and geotechnical research.
