Dr Jennifer A. Burnham serves as Senior University Teacher and Programmes and Regulations Lead within the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield's School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. A dedicated education specialist since 2005, she champions innovative teaching methodologies across undergraduate and postgraduate chemistry programs while maintaining active research interests in chemistry education and main group chemistry.
Her academic credentials include an MEd in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (2012), complemented by Senior Fellow (2016) and Post-Fellow (2021) status with the Higher Education Academy. These qualifications underpin her evidence-based approach to curriculum development and educational leadership.
Burnham's research centers on transformative chemistry education practices, with particular emphasis on student skills development through open-ended project work, green chemistry integration, and boron-focused inorganic chemistry instruction. Her scholarship explores how social learning spaces, curriculum design, and professional networks enhance educational outcomes, consistently advocating for student autonomy and sustainability principles. She pioneered Sheffield Chemistry's Programme Learning Outcomes framework and promotes boron as the periodic table's premier element.
Analysis of her publication record reveals consistent contributions to pedagogical innovation, with recent work examining learning landscape mapping, informal educational spaces, and the evolving role of teaching specialists in research-intensive environments. Her publications bridge chemistry content expertise with educational theory, emphasizing practical applications for laboratory instruction and curriculum development.
Her distinguished contributions have been recognized through:
- Senate Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (2013)
- University of Sheffield Education Award, Highly Commended in Leadership in Education (2023)
- Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2016)
- Post-Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2021)
Burnham actively mentors colleagues through leadership roles including founding the Faculty Teaching Network (2012) and directing the Royal Society of Chemistry HE Chemistry Teaching Network since 2015. She chairs the RSC Higher Education Interest Group, serves as external examiner for multiple universities, and provides strategic guidance as education specialist on the OxICFM CDT advisory board. Her supervisory work encompasses Level 3/4 chemistry projects and personal tutoring, while her laboratory innovations include guided-inquiry techniques and sustainability-focused practicals.
As an influential figure in chemical education, she drives professional learning networks that support teaching specialists nationwide and advocates for systemic integration of sustainability principles across chemistry curricula through her leadership in green chemistry pedagogy and boron chemistry promotion.
