Jenni Vartiainen is a University Lecturer at the Department of Education, University of Helsinki, and affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and the Learning, Culture & Interventions (LECI) group. She serves as a supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in School, Education, Society, and Culture.

Her research focuses on early childhood education, emphasizing play-based and project-based learning in science education. She explores how digital tools and multiliteracies can enhance young children’s literacy practices and scientific inquiry, with a strong commitment to innovative pedagogical frameworks in Finnish contexts.
Her recent publications highlight trends in STEAM education, makerspaces, and dynamic literacy practices. These works reflect interdisciplinary approaches to early science education and the integration of creativity into curricula.
- Prizes: State Prize for Dissemination of Information (2009), LUMA Operator of the Year (2013), Young Researcher Grant (2017), and two grants for children’s book series and doctoral research (2015, 2017).
Vartiainen is actively involved in academic and public activities, including invited talks at international conferences and media contributions. Her projects, such as the Playful Learning Center and MOI program, demonstrate her leadership in educational innovation.
