Dr. Jemma Monkhouse is a Senior Lecturer in Primary and Early Years Education at the Department of Teacher Education, Sheffield Hallam University, within the College of Social Sciences and Arts. She leads the BA Early Years and Primary Education (3-7) and BA Primary Education (5-11) courses, and serves as Student Success Lead for completion and attainment across the Sheffield Institute of Education. Her teaching focuses on primary English, educational research, and professional learning.
Her research explores drama's role in English education, digital literacies, and cross-curricular approaches. Notably, her MA thesis investigated language evolution's implications for English teaching, and her ongoing EdD research examines drama's affective dimensions. She has collaborated with a teacher/researcher group on 21st-century literacies, presenting at UKLA conferences and publishing in educational journals.
Her work includes a lesson study on grammar teaching and presentations on methodologies for exploring emergent experiences in drama clubs. Professional roles include former Chair of Governors at Ashgate Croft School and current Trustee for The Learners' Trust, where she chairs the Standards and Performance Committee.
