Jelena Pogosjan is a Professor at the University of Alberta's Modern Languages and Cultural Studies Department within the Faculty of Arts. She holds a PhD from the University of Tartu (1997) and has been teaching since 1990, moving to the University of Alberta in 2002.
Her research focuses on Russian religious art history, official culture of the Russian Empire (especially 18th century), imperial calendar studies, and poetic themes in Russian odes. She advises PhD students on symbolic geographies and Russian Orthodoxy in modern literature.
Teaching includes courses like Fairy Tales and Folk Tales, Russian language levels, and Intermediate Russian. Recent publications explore topics like imperial iconography, masquerade culture, and apocalyptic symbolism in official contexts.
Her work bridges art history, cultural studies, and literary analysis with a focus on Russia's imperial identity construction through material culture and textual narratives.
