James White is a Research Fellow at the University of Tartu since 2018, specializing in Russian and Baltic history with a focus on Orthodoxy, religious movements, and imperial governance. His research explores topics such as Edinoverie, Old Believers, and the intersection of religion and nationalism in the Russian Empire and Soviet periods. He holds a PhD in History and Civilization from the European University Institute (2014), an MA from the University of Birmingham (2009), and a BA in Medieval and Modern History (2008).
His career includes awards like the Canadian Association of Slavists Article of the Year (2020) and a Russian Ministry of Science “Young Scholar” award (2021). He leads projects on Baltic Orthodoxy and has published extensively in journals like Ab Imperio and Cultural & Social History.
Research interests span Orthodox religious institutions, imperial policy, and cultural history. Notable works include Unity in Faith? (2020) and studies on Vormsi Island’s religious dynamics. He collaborates on the Orthodoxy as Solidarity project (2022–2026), funded by the Estonian Research Council.
