Jeffrey Walker, PhD, is a Professor of Biology at the University of Southern Maine (USM), affiliated with the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Science, Technology, and Health. He joined USM in 2000 after postdoctoral research at the Field Museum in Chicago. His expertise lies in evolutionary physiology and the evolution of functional systems, combining computational and empirical approaches. He teaches courses in Human Physiology, Biostatistics, and graduate Research Methods.
Education: PhD in Anatomy from SUNY Stony Brook and BA in Geology from the University of Pennsylvania.
Research focuses on trade-offs and modularity in functional systems, using models like Trinidadian guppies, sticklebacks, and fruit flies. Key themes include form-function relationships, evolutionary constraints, and biomechanical adaptations. His work bridges theoretical models with empirical studies, exploring how biological systems balance performance trade-offs through modular designs.
Recent articles address topics ranging from adipose tissue metabolism to predator-prey dynamics in fishes, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach.
Labs/Teams: The Walker lab investigates evolutionary functional systems, emphasizing experimental and computational methods to understand phenotypic evolution.
