Dr. Grant E Brown is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Concordia University. His research focuses on aquatic behavioural and chemical ecology, particularly predator-prey interactions, neophobic responses, and ecological uncertainty in species like Trinidadian guppies, Atlantic salmon, and convict cichlids.
- PhD (Memorial University of Newfoundland)
Professor Brown investigates how aquatic prey use public information to adjust behavioral trade-offs under ecological uncertainty, emphasizing neophobic predator recognition as an inducible response to predation risk. His work explores global change impacts on prey cognition, including climate change, invasive species, and habitat degradation.
Recent publications highlight trends in ecological uncertainty, neophobia, and chemical communication among aquatic organisms. Key subfields include predator avoidance mechanisms, social information use, and anthropogenic stressors.
Students interested in research projects on prey behavior, risk assessment, or aquatic ecology are encouraged to contact him via email at grant.brown@concordia.ca. His lab, the Brown Lab, conducts field and experimental studies with Trinidadian guppies and other fish species.
