Dr. Jeffrey Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of South Dakota. His research focuses on late imperial Chinese Buddhism, historical geography, and digital humanities, particularly the societal roles of Buddhist temples in Hangzhou. He holds a PhD in East Asian Studies (2024) and an MS in GIS (2022) from the University of Arizona, along with an MA in Buddhist Studies (2019) from Fo Guang University, Taiwan.

Research Interests: Liu investigates Buddhist temple gazetteers, Hangzhou’s religious landscape, and the intersection of digital tools with premodern Chinese history. His work combines GIS mapping with textual analysis to explore how monastic networks shaped cultural and religious spaces.
