Jeffrey L. Goodie, Ph.D., ABPP, serves as Professor and Deputy Director of Research in the Department of Family Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) in Bethesda, MD. A board-certified clinical health psychologist with over 22 years of combined active-duty service in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Public Health Service, he specializes in integrated primary care delivery and has deployed for major disaster responses including Sandy Hook, Boston Marathon Bombings, and Hurricanes Sandy, Harvey, and Maria.
His educational background includes:
- 1993: B.A. in Psychology, Dickinson College
- 1998: M.A. in Psychology, West Virginia University
- 2001: Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, West Virginia University
- 2001: Residency in Clinical Psychology, Wilford Hall Medical Center
- 2005: Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Health Psychology, Wilford Hall Medical Center
Dr. Goodie's research centers on implementing behavioral health consultants (BHCs) in primary care to address chronic pain, mental health conditions, and cardiovascular risks. His work emphasizes evidence-based, scalable interventions for military and disaster-affected populations, with significant contributions to the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model through clinical practice, training, and dissemination.
Recent publications (2015-2023) reveal consistent focus on integrated care effectiveness, particularly for chronic pain management in military settings, longitudinal depression-metabolic health relationships, and PCBH implementation frameworks. His research demonstrates strong translational impact through pragmatic trials and clinical guidance manuals.
Notable recognitions include:
- Excellence in Clinical Health Psychology Award (2023) from APA Division 38
- Harold M Hildreth Distinguished Public Service Award (2020)
- Dr. Rosalee G. Weiss Lecture (2018)
- Multiple fellowships in APA, ABCT, and SBM
As a mentor, Dr. Goodie trained generations of clinicians during his 8-year tenure as Director of Clinical Training and currently supervises integrated care practitioners. His active grant portfolio includes a U.S. Army-funded pragmatic trial (with Dr. Don McGeary) evaluating BHCs for chronic pain management in primary care, alongside disaster response behavioral health initiatives.
He collaborates with USU's Department of Family Medicine, National Capital Consortium, and military medical systems to advance integrated care models through interdisciplinary teams focused on military population health and disaster resilience.
