Dr. Jeffrey Johnson is a Professor of Chemistry and Department Chair at Hope College, where he has been since 2007. He was tenured in 2013 and promoted to full professor in 2018. Currently serving as a Schaap Research Fellow, his research focuses on the activation and functionalization of carbon-carbon single bonds through transition metal catalysis.
Research Focus
- Carbon-carbon bond activation mechanisms
- Ketone decarbonylation reactions
- Nickel and rhodium catalysis
- Development of new organic methodologies
- Application to natural product synthesis
Scientific Awards
- NSF CAREER Development Award
- AAAS Fellow
- Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award
- Thieme Chemistry Journal Award
- NSF Research at Undergraduate Institutions Grant
He actively mentors 8-10 students in his research group while engaging in institutional service, including chairing the Hope College Administrative Affairs Board. His work bridges fundamental mechanistic studies with practical synthetic applications.
