Jeffrey S. Cannon is an Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department at Occidental College, where he has been teaching since 2014. His office is located in Norris Chemistry 100, and he maintains regular office hours throughout the week.
Dr. Cannon earned his B.A. from Occidental College and completed his Ph.D. at the University of California, Irvine. His educational background has positioned him as an expert in organic chemistry and synthesis methodologies.
Dr. Cannon's research focuses on developing innovative methods for carbon-carbon bond construction, particularly catalytic and stereoselective approaches. His lab integrates experimental organic synthesis with computational methods to predict and explain reaction outcomes. The Cannon Lab has been active for over ten years, mentoring numerous undergraduate researchers who have co-authored publications with him. His research group has made significant contributions to photoredox catalysis, palladium-catalyzed reactions, and olefin metathesis.
Analysis of Dr. Cannon's publications reveals a consistent focus on developing new synthetic methodologies with emphasis on efficiency, selectivity, and mechanistic understanding. His work often bridges experimental and computational chemistry, demonstrating how theoretical approaches can inform practical synthesis. Recent publications show an increasing interest in photoredox catalysis and multicatalytic systems that combine different activation modes.

Dr. Cannon has mentored over twenty undergraduate students who have co-authored publications with him, demonstrating his commitment to research-based learning. His NIH-funded research supports multiple student researchers each year. The Cannon Lab maintains active collaborations with other research groups, as evidenced by co-authorships with prominent chemists like Larry Overman and Robert Grubbs. The lab has presented research at major conferences including the National Organic Chemistry Symposium.
Operating from Norris Chemistry Building, the Cannon Lab has established itself as a productive undergraduate research program with continuous summer research opportunities for over ten years. The lab maintains an active social media presence through Instagram and regularly participates in Occidental's Summer Research Conference.
