Emmanuelle Despagnet-Ayoub serves as Professor and Department Chair of Chemistry at Occidental College, appointed in 2018. She maintains a dual affiliation as Technologist at JPL (Pasadena, CA) while teaching at Occidental College (Los Angeles, USA).
Dr. Despagnet-Ayoub earned her B.S. from Ecole Normale Superieure and completed her M.S. and Ph.D. at Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France, where she researched carbene chemistry under Professor Guy Bertrand and Dr. Didier Bourissou. Her academic journey includes a postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech with Nobel Laureate Professor Robert H. Grubbs, where she developed ruthenium catalysts for olefin metathesis, followed by a research scientist position at Materia, Inc., and a faculty appointment at CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in France from 2006-2018.
Her research program focuses on transition-metal complexes for energy storage and polymerization, the photochemistry of aromatic compounds, and activation of small molecules via electrochemical processes. The Despagnet-Ayoub Lab is dedicated to advancing fundamental understanding of organometallic chemistry while developing practical applications in energy and materials science.
She maintains regular office hours: Mondays from 1:00 to 2:30 pm & Fridays from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm in Norris Hall of Chemistry 302.
