Jeffrey Agar is the Associate Dean of Professional Programs and Lifelong Learning and Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Northeastern University, with a joint appointment in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences. He leads the Agar Lab focusing on ALS research through advanced analytical chemistry techniques like top-down mass spectrometry. His work bridges basic science and translational medicine, currently developing an ALS treatment based on protein modification studies.
Research interests include post-translational modifications of proteins, lipid expression changes in neurodegenerative diseases, and drug discovery for fALS. His lab is affiliated with the Barnett Institute for Chemical & Biological Analysis and the Center for Drug Discovery.
Notable recent contributions include a 2024 breakthrough halting ALS progression and a 2025 tool revolutionizing drug development. His work has been supported by grants such as the 2023 TIER1 Seed Grant for innovative research. Agar advises a team of PhD students and collaborates across Northeastern's science and health sciences colleges.
