Jeff Smith is an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Victoria’s School of Child and Youth Care. He holds a BMT from Capilano University, an MA in Counseling Psychology from the University of Victoria, and is a PhD candidate in Education at the University of Manitoba. Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor at Brandon University’s Faculty of Education.

Research Interests: Jeff’s work focuses on Indigenous education, decolonization of counseling and music therapy, settler colonial studies, arts-based research, and mental health. He emphasizes anti-colonial approaches to institutional change and collective well-being.
Publications Overview: His recent work explores de-settlering in music therapy and decolonization theory. Earlier publications address youth work, critical pedagogy, and reconciliation in education. His research bridges theory and practice, often employing innovative methodologies like ethnomethodology and discourse analysis.
Professional Roles: As a Canadian Certified Counsellor, Jeff maintains a private practice and consults on anti-colonial institutional reforms. He has supervised and mentored practitioners in youth work and counseling.
