Jeff Marx is a Professor in the Department of Physics at McDaniel College. He teaches a wide range of courses from introductory science and astronomy to advanced topics like Quantum Mechanics and Thermodynamics. He is also known for teaching unique extracurricular courses such as backpacking and juggling.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Physics (1998) and a B.S. in Physics (1992), both from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Dr. Marx's research focuses on two primary areas: physics pedagogy and theoretical modeling. His work in pedagogy aims to improve student learning through innovative curricula, assessment tools, and understanding of conceptual misconceptions. In theoretical and experimental modeling, he explores diverse systems including astrophysical phenomena, sports physics, fluid dynamics, and wireless power transmission. His research often involves close collaboration with undergraduate students.
The recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on physics education research, particularly in optics, problem-solving assessment, and conceptual understanding. The work spans both curriculum development and evaluation of teaching methodologies.
