Apollo Mian is a Professor in the Department of Physics at McDaniel College, where he also serves as the Director of the Engineering Dual-Degree Program. He has been a dedicated faculty member since 1999, contributing to both undergraduate education and research in physics and engineering disciplines.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics and Mathematics, Berea College (1990)
- Ph.D. in Physics, Oklahoma State University (1996)
Apollo Mian's research lies at the intersection of nonlinear optics and spectroscopy, with a focus on advanced optical materials such as glasses, organic semiconductors, and photonic crystals. His work combines experimental physics with engineering applications, fostering a hands-on learning environment for students. He emphasizes discovery-based education, integrating research into undergraduate training.
His international research engagement includes two five-year appointments as an Honorary Research Fellow: first at the London Centre for Nanotechnology (2008–2012), and later at the Department of Physics, University College London (2015–2020). These collaborations have enhanced his research profile and provided invaluable global research opportunities for McDaniel students.
As a teacher-scholar, Apollo Mian is passionate about helping students overcome conceptual barriers in science and develop into critical thinkers. He aims for his students to distinguish science from pseudoscience, embrace lifelong learning, and become ethically responsible global citizens and stewards of the environment.
He has supervised student researchers in his laboratory, building a robust undergraduate research program that has produced peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. His mentorship has helped numerous students pursue advanced degrees at prestigious institutions and launch successful careers in physics and engineering.
Apollo Mian previously taught at Gettysburg College and completed postdoctoral research at the Applied Optics Center, Delaware State University, before joining McDaniel College.
