Jeff Jiapeng Ruan is an Associate Research Scientist in the Department of Medicine (Digestive Diseases) at Yale School of Medicine. He holds a PhD from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1998), MSc from Nanjing University (1991), and BA from Hanzhong Teachers College (1985). His research focuses on understanding genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying Gaucher disease and its comorbidities, including neurodegeneration, hematologic dysregulation, and associated cancers.
Key research interests include:
- Genomic basis of phenotypic variability in Gaucher disease patients
- Biomarker development for disease progression and treatment response
- Interactions between Gaucher disease and neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease
- Impact of modifier genes on disease severity
Recent work has revealed critical insights into osteonecrosis risk stratification, pulmonary hypertension mechanisms, and the increased hepatocellular carcinoma risk in Gaucher patients. He collaborates extensively with clinicians and researchers such as Pramod Mistry and Shreeganga Chandra on translational studies.
No formal advisees are listed, though his work involves collaborative teams managing large patient cohorts. Research has been supported by institutional grants focusing on rare diseases and precision medicine initiatives.
His laboratory is part of the Yale Gaucher Disease Research Program, contributing to both basic science and clinical trials for enzyme replacement therapies.
