Jeannine Johnson serves as Senior Lecturer and Director of the Writing Program at Wellesley College, teaching first-year writing courses including specialized seminars like Wellesley and the World and What's in a Name? Investigating What We Call People, Places, and Things. She co-teaches advanced writing for McNair Scholars and has developed curriculum integrating wellness practices through collaborations such as the 2016-2018 Live and Learn: Understanding Mind-Body Connections course.
Her educational background features a B.A. from Haverford College and Ph.D. from Yale University.
Johnson's research centers on poetry's role in contemporary society, writing pedagogy, and cross-cultural educational practices. She examines how poets defend poetry's cultural value while questioning its societal resonance, develops tools for student writing clarity and audience awareness, and explores wellness integration in academic settings. Her international work includes teaching and advising on writing best practices in Japan and China.
Her scholarly output includes the 2007 book Why Write Poetry? Modern Poets Defending Their Art, which analyzes poets' self-reflective defenses of poetry's cultural significance within modern contexts.
Johnson mentors students through Wellesley's Writing Program and McNair Scholars, conducting workshops for high school through graduate students and faculty across disciplines. Her collaborative approach is evident in team-taught courses with colleagues like Jocelyne Dolce and Connie Bauman.
