Professor Jeanne Nuechterlein is a distinguished academic in the Department of History of Art at the University of York. Her research focuses on northern European art, particularly German and Netherlandish art of the 15th–16th centuries, and its receptions in later periods. She is affiliated with York’s Centre for Medieval Studies and Centre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies. Her work explores religious and secular imagery, the impact of the Reformation on art, and interdisciplinary connections between art and science.
Education: BA (Rice University), MA and PhD (University of California, Berkeley). She has held prestigious fellowships, including the Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2010–2011) and Kluge Fellowship (2005–2006). Her exhibitions include Strange Beauty: Masters of the German Renaissance (2014) and Making a Masterpiece: Bouts and Beyond (2019–2020).
Research interests span art’s cultural roles, patronage, and methodologies. Notable projects include a monograph on Holbein and mathematical knowledge, and studies linking Jan van Eyck to complex systems theory. She actively collaborates with institutions like the National Gallery, London, and has co-curated major exhibitions.
Grants and awards include AHRC-funded doctoral partnerships and British Academy grants. Her teaching includes undergraduate and postgraduate courses on prints, iconoclasm, and interdisciplinary art history. She supervises PhD students on topics ranging from early Netherlandish painting to Eucharistic piety.
Publications include Hans Holbein: The Artist in a Changing World (2020) and articles in Art History and Burlington Magazine. She served as Deputy Editor of Art History (2017–2022) and has delivered invited lectures globally.
