Jeanne Frances Duffy is a Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, specializing in Sleep Medicine. Her work focuses on circadian physiology and sleep research, particularly examining individual differences in sleep patterns and responses to sleep loss.
Dr. Duffy earned her BA in Biology from Northeastern University (1992), MBA in Business Management from Simmons University (1991), MS in Biology from Northeastern University (1997), and PhD in Biology: Physiol & Neurobiol from Northeastern University (1998).
Her research interests span both basic and applied aspects of sleep research and circadian physiology. She has focused on understanding individual differences in sleep timing, duration, need, and response to acute and chronic sleep loss. Her work examines how cognitive performance responds to sleep loss across different populations, and how circadian physiology differences contribute to individual sleep variations. She also studies circadian rhythm sleep disorders like shift-work dyssomnia, advanced and delayed sleep phase syndromes, and jet lag, while developing novel treatments and biomarkers for sleep deficiency and circadian timing.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on aging populations and shift work, with significant contributions to understanding how sleep patterns affect cognitive performance, particularly among healthcare workers. Her work frequently examines interventions to improve sleep quality for night shift workers, with increasing attention to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sleep patterns.

Dr. Duffy has served as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded grants, including R01AG044416 focused on Treatment of Circadian Disruption from Shiftwork in Older Adults. She collaborates extensively with prominent researchers in the field, particularly Charles Czeisler. Her research group has conducted numerous field studies on sleep, performance, health, and safety in shift workers across healthcare, aviation, law enforcement, and other first responder settings. She also serves on editorial boards for Sleep, Clocks & Sleep, and as Section Editor for Current Sleep Medicine Reports.
