Dr. Steven A. Shea is a Professor at the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences, Oregon Health & Science University, with a research focus on circadian rhythms, sleep physiology, and their impacts on cardiovascular and metabolic health. He leads studies examining how endogenous circadian systems modulate disease vulnerability across day/night cycles and investigates occupational health implications of shift work.
- B.Sc., Loughborough University (1982)
- Ph.D., University of London (1989)
- Certificate of Completion, Leadership Program, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Harvard Business School (2010)
His research spans circadian modulation of cardiovascular function, metabolic consequences of circadian misalignment, sex-specific physiological differences, and workplace interventions to improve health. Recent work explores cannabis use effects on sleep, circadian timing in obesity, and sedentary behavior interventions.
Scientific Contributions include over 100 PubMed publications and leadership in understanding how circadian systems interact with behaviors (sleep/wake, exercise) to influence health outcomes. Key findings demonstrate circadian control over blood pressure recovery post-exercise and nocturnal dipping impairment in shift workers.
As a member of the Sleep Research Society and American Academy of Sleep Medicine, he bridges basic science with clinical applications, emphasizing chrono-therapeutic approaches to disease management and prevention.
