Jeanette Roan is an Associate Professor in the History of Art and Visual Culture Program at California College of the Arts (CCA). She holds a B.A. in Visual Art from Brown University and a Ph.D. in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester. Her research spans visual studies, cultural studies, Asian American studies, and comics studies. Her first book, Envisioning Asia (2010), explores cinema as a tool of cultural positioning in U.S.-Asia relations. Recent work focuses on graphic novels and Asian American representations, including co-authored analyses in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Literature and Seeing Comics Through Art History. She has presented at major conferences like the American Studies Association and the Society for Cinema and Media Studies. Notable roles include serving as a jury member for CAAMFest 2009 and becoming an Associate Editor of INKS: The Journal of the Comics Studies Society in 2022. Prior to CCA, she held positions at George Mason University and Oberlin College.
Her interdisciplinary work bridges film, media, and visual culture, with publications in Jump Cut, Quarterly Review of Film and Video, and The Comics Journal. She actively participates in academic communities, including presentations at the Comics Studies Society and the International Comics Arts Forum.
