Evelyn Shih is an Assistant Professor of Chinese at the University of Colorado Boulder, specializing in modern Chinese literatures, film/media studies, and Cold War cultural histories. Her research explores comic culture's role in oppositional communication during authoritarian contexts in East Asia, with a focus on transmedia phenomena and affect theory.
Shih holds a BA in Literature from Yale University, and an MA and PhD in East Asian Languages and Cultures from UC Berkeley. Her current book project, Cold War Laugh Lines, examines comic communication in Cold War Taiwan and South Korea through diverse media archives. A second project investigates nonsense culture in colonial Taiwan and Korea.

Her work bridges film analysis, media history, and postcolonial theory. As co-chair of the Comedy and Humor SIG for Society of Cinema and Media Studies, she actively promotes interdisciplinary dialogue on humor studies. Recent publications include analyses of sound in Taiwanese cinema, transnational musicals, and colonial nonsense aesthetics.
Her research also explores film sound studies, genre hybridity (e.g., comedy-espionage), and cultural hybridization across East Asian contexts. Upcoming projects include a co-edited journal issue on noise in Chinese media and explorations of film sound and blue humanities.
