Dr. Jeananne Nichols is the Carol Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor of Music Education at Western Carolina University and coordinates the music education program. She holds a DMA from Arizona State University and previously taught at the University of Illinois and Olivet College. Her K-12 teaching experience includes band instruction in Georgia and Tennessee schools, and she founded the Knoxville Youth Christian Concert Bands for homeschooled students.
Nichols' research employs narrative inquiry to amplify marginalized voices, focusing on participatory music with incarcеrated youth, LGBTQ+ experiences in music education, and the history of the US Air Force WAF Band. Her work intersects social justice, queer theory, and critical service-learning, examining how music education can challenge systemic inequities.
Publications appear in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Music Educator’s Journal, and International Journal of Education and the Arts. She has presented globally, including in Canada, China, and the UK. Nichols teaches music curriculum design and advises doctoral research at Boston University while maintaining editorial board roles for Research Studies in Music Education.
