Professor Jean-Vincent Blanchard is a specialist in Early Modern Literature and Culture at Swarthmore College, where he leads the French and Francophone Studies section within the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. Since joining in 1997, he has contributed to interdisciplinary programs including Interpretation Theory and Medical Humanities. His research spans biographical studies like Éminence: Cardinal Richelieu and the Rise of France (2011), architectural power dynamics in Louis XIV’s France, and pedagogical digital editions such as La Princesse de Clèves.
- Education: PhD from Yale University
Research Interests: Focus on early modern French literature, historical anthropology, sensory studies (e.g., 'A History of the Five Senses'), and intersections between literature and medicine. His current projects include analyzing power structures in 17th-century architecture and developing a digital critical edition of La Princesse de Clèves.
