Jean-Pierre Martin is a retired Professor of Medieval French Language and Literature at the Université d'Artois, associated with the Faculty of Letters and Arts. His career included roles as Director of the UFR Letters and Arts (2000–2003), Director of Artois Presses Université (2005–2010), and President of the Réseau Euro-Africain de Recherches sur les Épopées (2006–2016). He holds a State Doctorate in French Literature from Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle (1998) and has extensive teaching experience since the 1970s.
Research focuses on chansons de geste, epic traditions, oral literature, and cultural anthropology. Key themes include epic genre theory, philological analysis of medieval texts, and cross-cultural comparisons with African oral epics. Over 100 scholarly works include critical editions of medieval texts (e.g., Orson de Beauvais), co-edited volumes on epic studies, and articles analyzing narrative structures, temporalities, and motifs.
Publications emphasize methodological innovation in medieval studies, bridging textual criticism with anthropological perspectives. Recent work explores intersections between medieval epics and African oral traditions, highlighting shared narrative strategies and cultural memory frameworks.
