Jean-Paul Simjouw is a Distinguished Lecturer at the University of New Haven, serving in the Biology and Environmental Science Department within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds dual roles as Coordinator for both the B.S. Environmental Science and B.S. Marine and Environmental Sciences programs.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Chemical Oceanography (2004) from Old Dominion University
- Master of Science in Geochemistry (1996) from the University of Utrecht
- Bachelor of Science in Analytical Chemistry (1992) from Polytechnical School, Etten-Leur
Dr. Simjouw's research focuses on dissolved organic matter in marine and estuarine environments, chemical oceanography, and aquatic biogeochemistry. His work examines the dynamics of organic compounds in coastal systems, particularly during algal blooms and in relation to bacterial processes. He has developed expertise in analytical techniques for characterizing dissolved organic matter, including solid phase extraction and ultrafiltration methods.
Analysis of his publications reveals consistent focus on dissolved organic matter characterization across various marine environments, with particular attention to seasonal variations, bloom dynamics, and methodological comparisons for analysis. His research bridges chemical analysis with ecological implications in coastal systems.
Dr. Simjouw actively engages with the community through environmental education initiatives, representing the Robert M. Lee and Linda M. Wilkins Marine Science Center at public events like the '1st Saturday Walk & Roll' series. He collaborates with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture to provide students with fieldwork experiences in environmental science.
He maintains an office in Dodds Hall 319 and can be reached at JSimjouw@newhaven.edu or (203) 932-1253.
