Jean-Marc Fontan is a sociologist and full Professor in the Department of Sociology at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), where he teaches courses on development sociology, economic sociology, cultural sociology, local development, and social economy. He is a member of the Research Collective on Homelessness, Poverty, and Social Exclusion (CRI).
- Teaching: Development sociology, Economic sociology, Cultural sociology, Local development, Social economy.
- Research: Focus on community economic development, social innovation, critical intellectualism, and the role of technology in societal transformation.
Academic Contributions span theoretical frameworks (e.g., emancipatory horizons, civilizational change) and practical case studies in Montreal’s urban development. His recent works analyze digital communication’s impact on critical thought and social activism.
Doctoral Advisee: Ian Parenteau (2011) on alter-globalization ideology. Collaborated with Juan-Luis Klein and Diane-Gabrielle Tremblay on metropolitanization and global village dynamics (1999).
