Jean-Luc Voisin is a Doctor of Human Paleontology affiliated with the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (Paris) and Aix-Marseille Université, where he conducts research through USM 103 and UMR 7194 at the Musée de l'Homme and UMR 7268. He holds authorization to direct research (HDR) and served as Associate Editor for the American Journal of Physical Anthropology (2016-2021).
His teaching activities span multiple institutions including Université Paris Diderot (Paris VII) and Université Pierre-et-Marie-Curie (Paris VI), where he has regularly taught courses on human evolution ('La lignée humaine') and osteology since at least 2005. He has supervised student research projects in paleoanthropology and participated in doctoral school activities.
Research focuses on human evolution with emphasis on Neanderthal morphology, particularly shoulder biomechanics and functional adaptations. His investigations cover:
- Evolutionary anatomy of hominin shoulder girdles
- Neanderthal-modern human interactions and speciation
- Functional adaptations in Homo naledi
- Paleopathological analysis of fossil remains
