Dr. Jean-Eric Ghia is a Professor in the Department of Immunology at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. He serves as Director of Gastrointestinal Basic Biology Research at the Manitoba IBD Clinical Research Centre and is a Research Scientist at the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM). His research focuses on neuro-immune mechanisms in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), particularly the roles of chromogranin-derived peptides, the autonomic nervous system, and psychological factors like anxiety/depression in disease progression.

Research Interests: Dr. Ghia investigates the interplay between the autonomic nervous system (e.g., vagus nerve) and immune cells (e.g., macrophages) in gastrointestinal inflammation. His lab explores novel therapeutic targets for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, combining basic science, translational research, and clinical collaborations. He has established a neurogastroenterology lab supported by a CFI grant, providing resources like colonoscopy and USSING chambers for research.
Awards & Funding: Trainees in his lab have received over $300,000 in scholarships. His work is supported by grants enabling translational IBD research programs.
Advising & Leadership: Chair of the Department of Immunology’s External Communication & Outreach and Undergraduate Education committees. Completed the Academic Health Sciences Leadership Program (2020).
Labs & Collaborations: Leads the NeuroGastroLab at the University of Manitoba. Collaborates with institutions like the Manitoba IBD Clinical Research Centre and global networks such as the Manitoba Neuroscience Network and the International Network for Education Development and Scholarship in the Biosciences.
Public Engagement: Active in science communication through CBC radio segments, TV appearances, and contributions to Science Mag junior explaining topics like COVID-19 to children.
