Jean Dangler is Professor Emerita of Medieval Iberian Studies in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Tulane University's School of Liberal Arts. She earned her PhD from Emory University in 1997 and has held academic positions at Mount Holyoke College, Florida State University, and Tulane University, with a visiting research appointment at Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
Her research explores medieval medical history, multicultural Iberia, theories of alterity, and representations of the body in global medieval contexts. Her scholarly contributions include examinations of witness narratives, gender debates in medieval texts, and queer readings of premodern literature. She is particularly known for innovative applications of network theory and world-systems analysis to historical literary studies.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals four interconnected domains: historical examinations of gender and sexuality in medieval contexts, theoretical approaches to alterity and cultural difference, literary representations of medical practices, and innovative methodologies for studying nonmodern Iberia. Her work demonstrates consistent engagement with theoretical frameworks from poststructuralism, gender studies, and cultural theory.
Professor Dangler has served in significant academic leadership roles including on the Modern Language Association's Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize Selection Committee and as Executive Committee member for the Division of Medieval Hispanic Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. She currently serves on editorial boards for La corónica and postmedieval journals.
