Prof. Dr. Robert Folger is a prominent scholar in Romance Literatures and Cultural Studies at Heidelberg University, serving as HCIAS Joint Professor bridging Ibero-American Literature and Apocalyptic Studies. He holds a Chair in Romance Literatures and concurrently serves as Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages and Senator at Heidelberg University. His research focuses on medieval and early modern Iberian literature, colonial Latin American studies, and apocalyptic cultural themes.
Education: MA (Medieval/Modern History/Spanish) from LMU Munich (1993), PhDs in History (Rostock, 1999) and Spanish Literature (Wisconsin-Madison, 2001), Habilitation in Iberian Cultural History (LMU Munich, 2007).
Research emphasizes Medieval Iberian historiography, Spanish Golden Age theater, and premodern literature-medicine intersections. Current projects include 'Science and Fiction in the Early Modern Spanish Empire' and leadership of the SFB 933 'Material Text Cultures' subproject on body-text relations in premodern Iberia.
Editorial roles include editorship of Iberoromania and board memberships at La corónica and Arte Nuevo. Administrative roles include directing Heidelberg's Central Language Lab and chairing the Department of Romance Languages.
Recent publications (2018-2019) explore Cervantes' influence, Sor Juana's dream symbolism, Quiroga's short fiction, and colonial historiography. Upcoming works address Bolaño's apocalyptic narratives and Latin American spatial imaginaries.
