Professor Jean-Charles Rochet is an Honorary Professor at the University of Geneva's Geneva School of Economics and Management (GSEM) and holds a senior chair at the Swiss Finance Institute. He also serves as a visiting professor at Zurich University. His academic background includes a PhD in Mathematical Economics from the University of Paris Dauphine. Rochet has taught globally at institutions like the Toulouse School of Economics and the London School of Economics, and has engaged with central banks worldwide. As former President (2012) and long-time Fellow (since 1995) of the Econometric Society, he has authored over 80 journal articles and seven influential books, including *Microeconomics of Banking* and *Balancing the Banks*.
His research focuses on banking systems, financial stability, and contract theory, with notable contributions to sovereign debt sustainability, capital regulation, and systemic risk. Key areas include analyzing credit fluctuations, optimal dividend policies, and NGO activism's economic impact. Rochet has presented at prestigious venues like the Nobel Symposium on Money and Banking (2018) and the Bachelier Finance Society Congress (2016).
Scientific recognition includes the Maurice Allais Prize (2019) and his work on financial regulatory frameworks, such as critiques of Basel III and proposals for taxing financial transactions. His interdisciplinary approach bridges macroeconomic modeling, financial innovation, and policy design.
Rochet’s academic leadership extends to co-editing journals and advising policymakers on banking crises and climate policy. His current research explores green finance, digital currencies, and the long-term effects of capital requirements.
