Jean Beaman is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), with additional affiliations in Black, Race, and Ethnic Studies, International Migration Studies, and Africana Studies. Previously, she held positions as Associate Professor at the University of California-Santa Barbara, faculty at Purdue University, and postdoctoral fellowships at Duke University and the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
Her ethnographic research examines race/ethnicity, racism, global migration, and state violence in France (and Western Europe) and the United States. Key themes include cultural citizenship, antiracist mobilizations, and the concept of 'suspect citizenship' targeting visible minorities in France. She also explores intersectional approaches to migration, gender, and sexuality.
