Jean-Baptiste Poline is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University and the Montreal Neurological Institute & Hospital (The Neuro). He serves as Co-Chair of the NeuroHub, Chair of the Technical Steering Committee for the Canadian Open Neuroscience Platform (CONP), and Primary Investigator at the Ludmer Centre for Neuroinformatics & Mental Health.
Poline obtained an engineering degree in computer sciences and electronics in Paris (1983-88), a Master's in Biomathematics (1989-90), and a PhD in Image Analysis and Biostatistics (1990-93) at Université Paris Diderot. He completed his 'Habilitation a diriger des Recherches' (2003) at Université Pierre et Marie Curie.
A pioneer in functional MRI and neuroinformatics, Poline develops statistical modeling techniques for brain imaging (fMRI/PET) applied to large genetic datasets. He co-created the widely-used Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) software and advocates for open science through data sharing and reproducibility initiatives like Frontiers in Brain Imaging Methods.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Killam Scholar
Poline led biostatistics for the IMAGEN study (Europe's first multi-center neuroimaging genetics project) and held leadership roles at NeuroSpin Imaging Center and UC Berkeley. He actively shapes international neuroimaging standards through the International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility and Organization for Human Brain Mapping.
He directs the Neuroimaging and Neuroinformatics Research Group at The Neuro, driving collaborative neuroscience via NeuroHub and CONP infrastructure to enable large-scale data analysis across institutions.
