Dr. Jean Bahney is an Assistant Professor of Education Literacy at the College of Education, Buena Vista University, where she teaches core courses in literacy, curriculum, and methods for diverse learners. She brings extensive experience from K–12 education and educational leadership, having served in multiple states including Iowa, Texas, and Arkansas.
Her research and professional interests focus on literacy education, teacher preparation, curriculum design, and educational leadership. With a strong background in reading instruction and school improvement, Dr. Bahney has contributed significantly to state-level policy through her service on teacher comparability committees and as a state-appointed textbook reviewer in Texas. She has also led major educational initiatives, including directing a university grant site recognized with a national ATE award.
Dr. Bahney has presented at prominent national conferences such as the College Reading Association, International Reading Association, National Reading Conference, and Association of Teacher Educators, as well as regional and state-level organizations focused on literacy, staff development, and leadership. Her work spans both practice and policy, particularly in improving outcomes for academically challenged schools.

Throughout her career, Dr. Bahney has held significant leadership roles, including Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, elementary principal, Executive Director of Special Education, and state-appointed Conservator for struggling districts. She served as Interim Superintendent at the request of the Texas Commissioner of Education. She has also mentored future educators as a Student Teaching Supervisor and contributed to professional development across multiple domains.
She held leadership positions in professional organizations, including President of the Texas Council of Women School Executives and active roles in various reading associations. Her grant coordination work demonstrates commitment to innovation in teacher education.
