Jay Meegoda

Dr. Jay N. Meegoda is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at NJIT. With over 30 years of experience, he specializes in applying scientific and engineering principles to solve real-world environmental and geotechnical challenges. He has led multidisciplinary research projects totaling over $7M from agencies like NSF, US Army, and NJDOT, with many technologies now in use or commercialization. His work spans PFAS remediation, shale softening, microplastic pollution, and sustainable waste management.

Education: PhD (1985), MS (1985), and BS (1980) from University of California and University of Sri Lanka.

Research focuses on environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and sustainable technologies. Key projects include ultrasound-based PFAS degradation, hydraulic fracturing effects on shale, and community-based pollution prevention strategies. He actively collaborates internationally and co-authored over 200 papers.

Notable awards include NJDOT’s 2011 Research Implementation Award and ASCE’s best paper awards (2001, 2012). He advises NJIT’s Engineers Without Borders chapter and teaches courses in geotechnical engineering and environmental systems.
