Jay Hughes is a Lecturer in Paramedic Science at Sheffield Hallam University, affiliated with the College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences and School of Health and Social Care. He teaches core modules including pharmacology, advanced life support, trauma life support, and the Collaborative Multidisciplinary Module on Community Wellbeing, while serving as Co-Placement Lead for Yorkshire Ambulance Service to coordinate student clinical experiences.
He earned a BSc in Paramedic Science from Sheffield Hallam University in 2021. Prior to academia, he worked as an Ambulance Paramedic and Practice Educator for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, where he mentored student paramedics and began developing teaching experience through university collaborations.
His research focuses on pharmacology, pre-hospital advanced life support, and simulation-based education. He designs high-fidelity emergency care simulations to develop students' clinical decision-making and critical thinking in controlled environments, emphasizing readiness for dynamic pre-hospital scenarios. This work directly informs his teaching methodology across trauma and airway management curricula.
As an academic advisor, he provides individualized student guidance throughout their professional development. His placement coordination ensures seamless integration between classroom theory and real-world practice through structured partnerships with Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
He maintains active clinical practice through bank shifts with Yorkshire Ambulance Service and volunteer roles with St John Ambulance as an Event Paramedic, Youth Leader, and Volunteer Trainer, ensuring his teaching remains grounded in current emergency care standards.
