Dr. Jay Amin is an Associate Professor in Psychiatry of Older Age at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine. His research focuses on inflammation's role in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Lewy Body Dementia, with clinical trials testing novel treatments. He holds an Alzheimer's Research UK Clinical Research Fellowship (2014) and leads trials at the Memory Assessment and Research Centre (marctrials.org).
Education: MB BS from University of Southampton (2007), followed by NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship (2009-2012). His PhD (2018) explored inflammation in dementia using post-mortem brain tissue. Current roles include Honorary Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry at Southern Health NHS Trust.
Research interests include cerebral inflammatory markers, cohort studies, and combination therapies for dementia. Active projects examine blood-brain barrier permeability (funded by Alzheimer's Society) and T-cell profiles in DLB (University of Southampton grant). Teaching includes leading psychiatry modules in BM5 Year 2 and BMedSc research programs.
External roles include speaking at the 2016 Lewy Body Society conference. His work addresses dementia caregiver support, deprescribing interventions, and pandemic impacts on patient outcomes.
