Javon Jackson serves as Professor of Jazz Saxophone, Director of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, Jazz Ensemble Director, and Chair of Commercial Music at The Hartt School, University of Hartford.
His educational background includes a Master of Music from the State University of New York College at Purchase and a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music.
As a preeminent jazz saxophonist, Jackson's career spans international performance with legends like Art Blakey and McCoy Tyner, 21 recording projects as leader/co-leader, and film composition including a full score for Hitchcock's "The Lodger". His research interests focus on Jazz performance techniques, Saxophone pedagogy, Jazz Composition, and curriculum innovation in Jazz Education.
Under his directorship since 2013, the Jackie McLean Institute developed Connecticut's first NASM-accredited Master in Jazz Studies program, created the campus-wide "The Art of Jazz" course, and established undergraduate/graduate double majors in Music Education and Jazz Studies through collaboration with faculty and NEA Jazz Master David Baker.
Professor Jackson spearheads university-wide diversity initiatives including the annual Black History Month lecture series featuring Dr. Cornel West and Nikki Giovanni (who received honorary doctorates in 2019 and 2020), securing two endowed scholarships (J3 Scholarship 2019, Amy B. Robinson Scholarship 2020), and founding the "Meet the Masters" summer jazz camp via a 2016 Hartford Foundation grant serving students aged 13-18.
Previously Assistant Professor of Jazz at Long Island University (1996-1998) and Purchase College (1999-2007), he currently chairs Jazz for the National YoungArts Foundation while maintaining an active performance schedule through 2026 at venues including Monterey Jazz Festival and SFJAZZ Center.
