Javier Tabima Restrepo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Clark University, specializing in fungal genomics and evolutionary biology. His research focuses on genomic evolution of non-Dikarya fungi like Basidiobolus, integrating computational biology, population genetics, and plant pathology.
- NSF CAREER grant recipient for secondary metabolism evolution studies
- DOE JGI Community Science Program awardee
- Co-developer of bioinformatics tools like effectR and Microbe-ID
His lab investigates fungal population dynamics across ecological gradients (urbanization, host interactions), with key contributions to understanding Phytophthora epidemiology and Basidiobolus genomic complexity through 19 newly sequenced genomes. Recent publications in Mycologia, Msphere, and G3 highlight his work on fungal secondary metabolism and multi-kingdom microbiome interactions.
- Advises graduate/undergraduate students in fungal genomics and microbial ecology
- Collaborates with labs at University of Arizona and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
- Active in developing computational tools for pathogen identification and effector prediction
Recipient of NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship and multiple Clark University Faculty Development Grants, he contributes to Clark’s DEI initiatives and serves on graduate studies committees.
