Javier Mejia is a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University, affiliated with the Stanford Civics Initiative, Stanford Center for Latin American Studies, and Stanford Center for Poverty and Inequality. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Los Andes (2018), an M.A. in Economics from the same institution (2016), and a B.A. in Economics from Universidad de Antioquia (2012). Previously, he served as a Postdoctoral Associate in Economics at New York University Abu Dhabi and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Bordeaux.
His research focuses on the intersection of social networks and economic history, with specialties in entrepreneurship, political economy, Latin America, and the Middle East. He contributes to Forbes Magazine as an op-ed columnist and hosts The Economic and Political History Podcast and The Civic Agora.
His academic work explores themes such as institutional development, regional economic growth, and historical demography. He has published extensively on topics including banking history in Antioquia, constitutional theory, and the Manila Galleon’s economic impact. His interdisciplinary approach bridges economics, political science, and sociology.
