Javaid Rehman is a Professor of Law at Brunel University London's College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences, leading the Brunel Law School. Previously held roles include Head of Brunel Law School (2009-2013), UN Special Rapporteur on Iran's Human Rights (2018-), and founding Director of the Centre for Security, Media and Human Rights (2008-2015). His academic journey includes professorships at Ulster University's Transitional Justice Institute and the University of Leeds' Law School. He holds multiple advanced legal qualifications including PhD, LLM, and Fellowships from the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS).
Research focuses on intersections of Islamic law with international human rights, terrorism law, and constitutionalism in Muslim-majority states. Notable contributions include International Human Rights Law (2010), Rule of Law, Freedom of Expression and Islamic Law (2017), and pioneering work on LGBT rights in Muslim contexts. Over 180 publications include books, edited volumes, and journal articles translated into multiple languages.
Awards include the Papal Medal (2010), FAcSS recognition (2015), and Brunel's Research Impact Award (2020). Grants managed include €643,000 from EU 7th Framework and £4M for Ulster University's Transitional Justice Institute. Served as editor for Asian Yearbook of Human Rights and Islamic Law in Context series. Supervised 25 doctoral candidates and examined 150+ PhDs globally.
Engagement includes addressing UK Supreme Court, Pakistani judiciary, and UN bodies. Advocacy focuses on religious freedom, interfaith dialogue, and minority rights. Current roles include MENA/Pakistan Working Group member at Brunel and Coordinating Editor for Brill's human rights publications.
