Dr. Jason Young is the Chair and Associate Professor of Psychology at Hunter College, CUNY, and Deputy Chair of the Council on Honors. His research focuses on social psychology, risk perception, and decision-making, with projects addressing safer-sex behavior, fear of crime, financial behavior influenced by math anxiety, and the cognitive components of regret. He collaborates with institutions like the University of the West Indies and UC-Riverside. His lab, the Experimental Social Psychology Laboratory, actively involves undergraduate and graduate students in research.
Education: PhD in Psychology from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
Research Interests:
- Impact of mood/arousal on safer-sex decisions in dating couples
- Cross-cultural fear of crime perceptions (e.g., Trinidad and Tobago)
- Math phobia's influence on financial decision-making
- Regret's cognitive and emotional triggers
- Identity dynamics and life satisfaction
Lab & Collaborations: Directs a lab with 17+ student researchers, including projects on gay male dating couples (Stefanie Ambrosio), financial behavior (David McNew/Yana Litovsky), and international situation metrics (Carolina Herrera). Collaborates with Professors Darlene Defour (Hunter College), Derek Chadee (UWI), and David Funder (UC-Riverside).
Advising & Grants: Advises MA and honors students on research projects; leads federally funded studies (e.g., Fulbright projects on Trinidadian public safety perceptions).
