Jason Yeung is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC), part of the Faculty of Science. He holds a geological engineering background and is deeply committed to education as a first-generation university attendee. His teaching philosophy emphasizes active learning, inclusivity, and bridging industry experience with academia. He focuses on fostering student motivation and professional identity through equitable classroom environments.
Education: Yeung graduated from UBC’s Geological Engineering program, which shaped his career trajectory. His industry experience spans underground engineering, dam construction, arctic engineering, and project management across public/private sectors in water, transportation, and energy industries.
Research & Teaching: While primarily focused on pedagogy, his teaching areas include site investigation (EOSC 240), geomorphology (EOSC 330), and the geological engineering capstone design project (EOSC 445). He integrates industry partnerships and Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board standards into his courses.
Equity & Inclusion: As a person of colour, Yeung intentionally designs courses to create inclusive spaces, recognizing his role in representation and student belonging. His methods address student motivation through voice, connection, and confidence-building strategies.
