Erik Eberhardt is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC), within the Faculty of Science. His research focuses on geotechnical and mining engineering, particularly in rock mechanics, induced seismicity, block caving, and open pit slope stability. He has contributed extensively to understanding hydraulic fracturing impacts, deep underground excavations, and slope failure mechanisms through advanced numerical modeling and field data analysis. Eberhardt holds a PhD in Geological Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan and has held academic positions at ETH Zurich and UBC since 2004. He advises students on topics like seismic hazard assessment, mine safety, and geomechanical modeling.
Research Interests: Rock Mechanics, Induced Seismicity, Block Cave Mining, Open Pit Slope Stability, Geotechnical Instrumentation, and Discrete Fracture Network Analysis.
Education: PhD in Geological Engineering (University of Saskatchewan, 1995–1998), followed by roles at ETH Zurich (1998–2003) and UBC (2004–present).
Key Projects: Development of predictive models for induced seismicity, strainburst analysis in deep mines, and integration of machine learning for hazard assessment. Collaborations include the International Caving Research Network and industry partners addressing deep-seated rockslide risks.
Supervision: Currently mentoring students in geotechnical monitoring and hazard mitigation, with past advisees focusing on topics like hydraulic stimulation for fault slip mitigation and subsidence prediction in block cave mining.
