Jason Tipples is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Sunderland. His research focuses on understanding how emotions colour our thoughts and behaviour, with particular emphasis on non-verbal behaviour such as facial expressions and eye gaze. The human face has become central to his research, with a more recent focus on prejudice and other biases that influence the impressions we make of other people.
Dr. Tipples teaches psychology courses including PSY140, PSY122, PSY123, and PSYM65. His primary research areas encompass emotion perception, non-verbal communication, facial expressions, eye gaze processing, prejudice and biases, and social cognition.
His recent publications reveal a consistent research trajectory examining how emotional expressions are processed and interpreted. A major theme across his work is the investigation of how factors like emotional valence, facial sex, and race interact in recognition tasks. His research demonstrates sophisticated methodological approaches, frequently employing advanced statistical modeling techniques such as hierarchical Bayesian drift diffusion modeling and ex-Gaussian modeling of reaction time distributions to uncover the cognitive mechanisms underlying emotional processing.
Key contributions from his research include:
- The influence of face sex and race on emotional expression recognition
- Temporal distortions related to emotional stimuli, particularly threatening expressions
- The mechanisms behind speeded expression recognition tasks
- The relationship between gaze direction and social cognition
- Methodological advancements in analyzing reaction time data
Dr. Tipples' work bridges fundamental cognitive processes with social psychological phenomena, revealing how emotional information processing can alter basic perceptual experiences and social judgments.
