Jason Rigby is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music at Towson University. A renowned American jazz tenor saxophonist, Rigby is known for his compelling inside-outside style of performance and has performed at major venues across the US, Japan, Russia, Mexico, and Europe.
His research and creative interests focus on jazz performance, saxophone techniques, and improvisation. Rigby's Zen-like approach to art emphasizes quality and patience, fostering a fresh creative spirit in his work. He has released multiple recordings including his third album 'ONE' on Fresh Sound Records and serves as a core member of Mark Guiliana's Grammy-winning Jazz Quartet.
Rigby is a dedicated educator who mentors students of varying abilities. Previously an adjunct lecturer at City College of New York, he conducts international masterclasses while emphasizing instrument mastery and improvisational foundations through his 'beginner’s mind' philosophy.
As a performer, Rigby leads the Detroit-Cleveland Trio and co-leads the explosive trio Heavy Merge with pianist Russ Lossing and drummer Jeff Davis. He has been a member of electronic-garage-jazz group Heernt since 2007 and collaborates with ensembles including the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Arturo O'Farrill’s Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, and Westchester Jazz Orchestra.
