Jason Richard Eggert

Jason Richard Eggert serves as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School, where he directs the Criminal Appellate Practice Clinic. Concurrently, he works as an assistant defender with the State Appellate Defender Office (SADO) since 2016, representing indigent clients in criminal appeals.

Eggert's expertise centers on criminal appellate litigation with emphasis on constitutional protections, particularly Fourth Amendment challenges to digital evidence. His practice spans complex federal criminal cases from pre-indictment through habeas corpus petitions, with notable contributions to landmark rulings including People v. Hughes (establishing limits on cell-phone data searches across multiple investigations) and Carpenter v. United States (requiring warrants for historical cell-site location information). He regularly conducts specialized trainings for the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan and Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System.

As clinical faculty, Eggert mentors law students in appellate advocacy through the Criminal Appellate Practice Clinic, providing hands-on experience in brief writing, oral argument, and constitutional criminal procedure.
